Biographical history
The University Extension Board was established in 1919 following one of the recommendations by the Haldane Commission 'to review, co-ordinate and assist and if necessary supplement' the work of the constituent colleges in the field of adult education. It held its first meeting in June 1922. The Board's functions as it saw it was to fill up gaps in the provision of adult education by the constituent colleges by suggesting to the colleges what they might do to extend their work. The Board, therefore, felt it imperative that it should know accurately not only what the colleges were doing, but also what it would be possible for them to do in order that it could decide what work could best be done by the colleges and what work would best be left to external agencies such as the W.E.A. In the academic year 1998-1999 Administrative Ordinance 4 relating to the Board was repealed and the name of the Extension Board was removed from Statute 22 of the University.
