History

The United Reformed Church was formed in 1972 by the union of the Congregational Church in England and Wales (previously the Congregational Union of England and Wales) and the Presbyterian Church of England (churches which declined to merge formed the Congregational Federation). The Congregational Church in England and Wales comprised individual Congregational churches grouped together into regional and district unions. In Wales, English- and Welsh-language Reformed Churches had developed separately: the Congregational churches are English-medium; the Welsh-language equivalent is the Union of Welsh Independents (Undeb yr Annibynwyr Cymru). The United Reformed Church is organised into provinces, one of which is the Province of Wales.
