History
The Rationalisation Working Party was established by the University Council at its meeting of July 1985 with the following terms of reference: to respond on behalf of the University of Wales to the University Grants Committee Circular 12/85 (Planning for the late 1980s); to consider how the University of Wales could assist and strengthen the Colleges regarding rationalisation, and in terms of the Jarratt Report, [on efficiencies and rationalisation in British universities], to consider and make recommendations concerning the structure of the University of Wales. It held its first meeting on 12 December 1985 and its last (19th meeting, May 1988), by which time its work had been virtually subsumed by the Working Group on Powers and Functions, on 19 May 1988. It and its successor body recommended the amalgamation of departments and the concentration of teaching some subjects in certain centres, such as Music in Cardiff and Bangor, for example.
