Administrative history
A fund was raised by public subscription in 1911 to perpetuate the memory of the late Thomas Edward Ellis M.P., the income from that fund being used to make grants to assist research into the language, literature, history and antiquities of Wales and Monmouthshire, and the publication of the results of such research. The money was left in trust to the University in 1914 with its use to be administered through a consultative committee under the Senate. When the Senate ceased to exist in 1920, the responsibility for administering the fund rested with the Council which thereafter administered the funds after considering the advice of both the Board of Celtic Studies and the six members of the Thomas Ellis Memorial Committee. The Committee is still in existence.
