Thomas Charles ('Charles o'r Bala'; 1755-1814) was most likely born in Longmoor in the parish of Llanfihangel Abercywyn, Carmarthenshire. He became one of Wales's greatest Methodist leaders and educationalists, taking a primary role in establishing Cymdeithas y Beiblau (The Bible Society) in order to disseminate inexpensive Bibles in the Welsh language, and also in establishing sunday schools - an aspect of religious life which became prevalent amongst the Methodists.

'This … letter ... was written to my relative J. T. Price. F. J. Gibbins, Neath' (in ink on label affixed to last page of letter, now f. 38); Frederick Joseph Gibbins (1832-1907) of Neath was the son of Rebecca B. Gibbins (née Tregelles), a first cousin of Joseph Tregelles Price. F. J. Gibbins's son Frederick William Gibbins (1861-1937) loaned the letter to the 1909 Ecclesiastical Art Exhibition (see Guide to the Church Congress and Ecclesiastical Art Exhibition held in Swansea, October 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, 1909 (London, 1909), p. 119; cf. the label ('Ecclesiastical Art Exhibition 70A') on NLW ex 3050). It was inherited by Frederick's son Bevington Rhys Gibbins (1903-1977), Llanwrtyd, who gave it to the donor's father, an employee of his.
