Biographical history

The Swansea Harbour Trust was founded in 1791 to “repair, enlarge and preserve the Harbour of Swansea” and developed a comprehensive dock system and a private railway network. In 1881 they commissioned the construction of the Prince of Wales Dock that opened in 1881 and was expanded in 1898. The North Quay frontage was let to the Great Western Railway, the Neath and Brecon Railway and the Rhondda and Swansea Bay Railway, The Swansea Harbour Trust retained shunting locomotives which operated on their tracks. Following the Railway Act of 1921 the company became part of the Great Western Railway.
