History

Super Furry Animals band was formed in Cardiff in 1993 by Gruff Rhys, Huw Bunford, Guto Pryce, Cian Ciarán, Dafydd Ieuan and Rhys Ifans. Rhys Ifans left after a short time to pursue an acting career.

The first recording made by the Super Furry Animals was "Dim Brys: Dim Chwys" (Not Urgent: No Sweat) for a session on Radio Cymru in 1994.

In 1995 the extended play recordings (EP) 'Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (in space)' and ‘Moog Droog 'were released on the Ankst label.

By 1996, the band had signed to Creation Records, releasing their first single ‘Hometown Unicorn’ in February 1996, and then the first album 'Fuzzy Logic', in May of the same year.

Between 1996 and 1999 they had released 12 singles (1 EP) and 2 albums ‘Radiator’ and ‘Guerrilla’ under the Creation label.

On 15 May 2000 the album ‘Mwng' was released on their own label ‘Placid Casual’. The album went on to become the top selling Welsh language album of all time.

When Creation ended in 1999, SFA went to 'Epic', where they would record a further three studio albums over the next five years, ‘Rings Around the World', ‘Phantom Power’ and ‘Love Kraft’.

By 2005 most of the band were also working on individual projects, but would continue to produce two further albums, ‘Hey Venus’ and ‘Dark Days/Light Years’, this time on the Rough Trade label.
There was very little produced from 2010-2015; then 'Zoom! The Best of 1995-2016' was released before beginning a tour of the UK and North America.

Press cuttings as well as some memorabilia have been collected and donated to the National Library of Wales by Dr Carl Clowes and Dorothy Clowes, parents of Dafydd Ieuan (drums and voice) and Cian Ciarán (keyboards, synth, guitar and voice).
