Biographical history
The SS Eira was an 1252 ton coaster, built in 1894 at the Campbeltown Shipbuilding Co. of the Clyde, and owned by Lewis & Co. of Aberdyfi when she went missing after 13 Oct. 1898, having sailing from Whitehaven for Kronstadt with pig iron. The location of her wreck is now known to be at 5945.28 N, 2316.11 E, in the western Gulf of Finland. The SS Fawn was lost on the Coal Rock on 14 Dec. 1886 while trading between Llanelli and Liverpool.

Roberts, mayor of Aberystwyth, and Arthur Johnson Hughes, town clerk, comprising letters, minutes, rough notes, receipts, subscription lists and a bank book relating to the distress fund for the relief of the families of the crew of the SS Eira. Includes a printed subscription list for the SS Fawn crew relief fund, 1886, and a letter from Ernest Trubshaw of the Western Tin Plate Works Ltd, Llanelli, re. the organisation of the fund, 1899. Original parcel labelled 'Folio 1/54, Rec. 470 (1911), D. C. Roberts & o'rs, Eira Relief F'd'.
