Biographical history

Sir Cadwaladr Bryner Jones (1872-1954) was a leading figure in Welsh agricultural education. Born in Dolgellau, Merionethsire, and educated at Durham University, he became a lecturer in agriculture at the University of North Wales, Bangor, in 1893. He was made Professor of Agriculture at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, in 1907, and also became director of the college farm. In 1912, he was appointed the Agricultural Commissioner for Wales and Chairman of the Agricultural Council for Wales. In 1919, he became the first Secretary of the Welsh Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, a position he held for twenty years, although he continued his involvement in agricultural education. From 1948 to 1953, he was deputy chairman of the Agricultural Land Commission for England and Wales, and chairman of the Welsh Agricultural Land Sub-commission. Sir Cadwaladr Bryner Jones was awarded the C.B.E. in 1920, the C.B. in 1934, and a knighthood in 1947. He undertook research into the history of cattle, publishing several papers on the topic.
