History

The Rev. J. Roger Roberts, Methodist minister and politician, was born in 1935. He was educated at the University of Wales, Bangor, and at Handsworth College in Birmingham before becoming a superintendent methodist minister. He stood as a parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Party, Liberal S.D.P. (Social Democratic Party) alliance, and the Liberal Democratic Party in the Conwy Constituency during the 1979, 1983, 1987, 1992 and 1997 elections. He was also a councillor for the Llandudno East ward and the group leader of the Liberals on the Aberconwy Borough Council, 1976-1987. He was Chair of University Liberal Societies, the President of the Welsh Liberal Party and President of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, and one of the vice presidents of the Liberal Democrats (representing Wales). He has been the Welsh representative on ELDR (the European Liberal Party) Council, and Chair of Welsh Water Lifeline which sent aid to Ethiopia, Rwanda, and to the Kurds. He has led and organised overseas visits by choirs and orchestras. He is a well know broadcaster, especially on Radio 2 where he is a regular presenter of Pause for Thought and is also a very frequent broadcaster in both Welsh and English on BBC Cymru/Wales.
