History

The Howell family hailed from Bontdolgadfan, Llanbrynmair. David Howell (1816-1890) of Machynlleth and Aberdyfi was a cousin of the Reverend Samuel Roberts ('S.R.') and the father of Joseph Matthew Howell (1861-1954) of Plas Penhelig, Aberdyfi. Notable members of the Roberts family of Llanbrynmair include the Reverend John Roberts (1767-1834), Independent minister, who, around 1785, moved to Llanbrynmair from Mochdre, where his father, Evan Roberts (1729-1814) was a member of the Independent congregation. John Roberts began preaching at Llanbrynmair in 1790 and would eventually take over the ministry of the noted preacher Richard Tibbott on Tibbott's death in 1798. George Roberts (1769-1853), an Independent minister who emigrated to the United States in 1795, was a brother of John Roberts. The Independent ministerial legacy continued in John Roberts's sons Samuel ('S.R.') (1800-1885) and John ('J.R.') (1804-1884).
