Biographical history
The family originated from south Cardiganshire and north Carmarthenshire. They were descendents of the pioneers of nonconformity in Cardiganshire and had strong connections with the Unitarian cause. The line moved to Aberdare when the Rev. John Jones became minister of Hen Dŷ Cwrdd in 1833. His son, Rees Jenkin Jones, succeeded him in 1863.
The family were minor landowners and owned properties in south Cardiganshire, north Carmarthenshire and Aberdare.

Archival history
The papers of the Rev. John Jones were apparently passed to his son, the Rev. Rees Jenkin Jones, sometime after his death in 1863. He also acquired the papers of his wife, Mrs Anne Griffith Jones, who died in 1899. Dr Goronwy Jones acquired these papers following the death of his father, the Rev. Rees Jenkin Jones, in 1924. Following Dr Jones's death in 1945, the residue of the family papers, i.e., those not already deposited at NLW, passed to his sister, Anne, and brother-in-law, the Rev. Simon Jones.
Immediate source of acquisition or transfer
Donated on four separate occasions by Dr Goronwy Jones of Swansea between 1926 and 1935, and by his brother-in-law, the Rev. Simon Jones, Swansea, in June 1967.

The fonds consists of personal papers and correspondence, 1826-1967, of members of the family of Rees Jenkin Jones, namely the Rev. John Jones (1802-1863), Mrs Anne Griffith Jones (1852-1899), Dr Goronwy Jones (1881-1945), the Rev. Simon Jones (1879-1967) and the Rev. Rees Jenkin Jones (1835-1924) himself, together with estate records, 1620-1916, of the Clettwr estate, Cardiganshire, Cilgell Isaf estate, Carmarthenshire, and of premises in Aberdare, Glamorgan. Much of the material relates to the Unitarian cause in Wales.
