Treharne lectured at Manchester University from 1925 to 1930, when he was appointed Professor of History at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, a position which he held until his death in 1967. He edited the journal History from 1947 to 1956, served as vice-chancellor of UCW Aberystwyth from 1952 to 1954 and again in 1957, and was prominent in the Historical Association, of which he was President from 1958 to 1961. His main field of interest was thirteenth-century England, and in particular the reign of Henry III.
