History

In the early 17th century Maesgwynne in the parish of Llanboidy, Carmarthenshire, was owned by the Howell family. The last of the line, Walter Rice Howell (1724-1789), who died unmarried, bequeathed the estate to his godson, Walter Powell, a Bristol drysalter. He was succeeded by his only son, Walter Rice Howell Powell (1796-1834), the estate then passing to his son, also named Walter Rice Howell Powell (1819-1889). In 1873 the estate comprised 3,468 acres.
