Scope and content

Photographs of Dannie Abse, both solo portraits and taken in company with friends and colleagues from the literary and art world, who include Ted Hughes, Simon Armitage, D. J. Enright, Milein Cosman, John Tripp, John Ormond, Elaine Feinstein, Jeremy Robson, Siân Williams and Vicki Feaver, as well as Abse's wife, author and art historian Joan Abse, his daughter Keren and his later partner, poet Lynne Hjelmgaard. Public figures include David Ben-Gurion, primary founder and first prime minister of the State of Israel, and Welsh-born actor, comedian, singer and television presenter Harry Secombe. Some of the photographs were taken during the 1971 British Council Poetry Reading Tour of Israel, in which Dannie Abse participated (see under heading Miscellanea: Miscellanea relating to Dannie Abse). Items also include a photocopied series of photographs and copies of slides of Dannie Abse, most likely for inclusion in a publication, and portrait photographs of Abse, one signed and one printed as a postcard. Many items annotated on dorse, most in Abse's hand. Some of the photographs would later appear in publications such as Dannie Abse's autobiographical work Goodbye, Twentieth Century (for which see under heading Prose: Prose by/edited by Dannie Abse: Autobiography: Goodbye, Twentieth Century (Pimlico, 2001)).
