Ganed y cerflunydd, dyluniwr ac athro John Meirion Morris yn Llanuwchllyn a'i addysgu yng Ngholeg Celf Lerpwl (1955-9). Wedi cyfnod fel athro celf yn Ysgol Uwchradd Llanidloes, bu'n ddarlithydd celf yn y Mid-Warwickshire School of Art, Leamington Spa o 1964 hyd 1966 ac yna ym Mhrifysgol Kumasi, Ghana o 1966 hyd 1968, cyn ei benodi'n ddarlithydd yn Adran Addysg Coleg Prifysgol Cymru Aberystwyth o 1968 hyd 1978. Ym 1985, ennillodd radd M.Phil o Goleg Prifysgol Cymru Bangor am ei ymchwil i gelfyddyd diwylliant Celtaidd cyfnod La Tène. Wedi pum mlynedd fel Pennaeth Celf yn y Coleg Normal, Bangor, dychwelodd i'w fro genedigol, lle'r ymroddodd yn llawn amser i'w yrfa fel cerflunydd. Mae gwaith John Meirion Morris yn syrthio i ddwy gategori fras, sef ei ddelweddau o bobl nodedig, megis ei benddelw o Ray Gravell ar gyfer stiwdio'r BBC yng Nghaerdydd, a'i waith mwy symbolaidd/archdeipaidd, megis ei gofeb i Dryweryn. Cymharwyd ei benddelwau â gweithiau Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) a Jacob Epstein (1880-1959), a'i greadigaethau mwy symbolaidd â'r rheini o'r eiddo Anish Kapoor (g. 1954) ac Antony Gormley (g. 1950). 'Roedd John Meirion Morris yn briod â Gwawr a chawsant dri o blant. Lluniwyd y gwaith a elwir 'Pietà' fel coffadwriaeth i'w fab Dylan, a fu farw o diwmor ar yr ymenydd yn 2002.
= The sculptor, draughtsman and teacher John Meirion Morris was born in Llanuwchllyn and educated at Liverpool College of Art (1955-9). Following a period as art master at Llanidloes Secondary School, he lectured in art at the Mid-Warwickshire School of Art, Leamington Spa from 1964 until 1966, then at Kumasi University, Ghana from 1966 until 1968, prior to being appointed lecturer in the Education Department of the University College of Wales Aberystwyth from 1968 until 1978. In 1985, he gained an M. Phil. degree from the University College of Wales Bangor for his research into Celtic art of the La Tène period. After five years as Head of Art at the Normal College, Bangor, he returned to his native village, where he dedicated himself to a full-time career as a sculptor. John Meirion Morris' work falls into two broad categories, namely, his representations of famous people, such as his bust of Ray Gravell, commissioned for the BBC studios in Cardiff, and his more symbolic/archetypal work, such as his commemorative 'Tryweryn' piece. His busts have been compared to the works of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) and his more symbolic pieces to those of Anish Kapoor (b. 1954) and Antony Gormley (b. 1950). John Meirion Morris was married to Gwawr, with whom he had three children. The work entitled 'Pietà' was created as a memorial piece to his son Dylan, who died of a brain tumour in 2002.
