Papers Relating To Dr. John Picton. John Picton was born in Darlington, Co. Durham, c.1808. According to the 1871 census for 80 Cadogan Place, Chelsea, he was then 63 years old, unmarried, and a doctor of physic (TNA: Rg 10/89, fo. 14, p. 20, sch. 75). According to the 1881 census return for 36 Carlyle Square, Chelsea, he was then aged 73, unmarried, and a magistrate and MD (PRO: Rg 11/81, fo. 74, p. 44, sch. 255). On both occasions, the rest of his household consisted of two servants. When he wrote his will (no. 349, date not supplied), he described himself as of 23 Carlyle Square, co. Mddx, and Iscoed, co. Carm., Doctor in Medicine. His is probably the death registered in the June quarter of 1883 (John Picton, aged 75, Chelsea, ref. 1a.233).
