The Contemporary Art Society for Wales (CASW) was established during the 1930s by, amongst others, Welsh-born painter Augustus John and Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis, 8th Baron Howard de Walden of Chirk Castle, a distinguished art collector and President of the Contemporary Art Society, with the inaugural meeting of the Society taking place in 1937. Its Constitution states that '[t]he objects of the Society shall be to foster and promote the maintenance, improvement and development of artistic taste and the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the arts among the people of Wales ...'.
