Ganed y bardd a'r llenor David John Williams (1885-1970) yn Llansawel, Sir Gaerfyrddin, cyn symud i Rydcymerau ym 1891. Astudiodd Saesneg ym Mhrifysgol Cymru Aberystwyth a Choleg yr Iesu, Rhydychen a threuliodd ran helaethaf ei oes fel athro Saesneg yn ysgol ramadeg Abergwaun. Yn genedlaetholwr ac yn sosialydd, 'roedd yn un o sefydlwyr Plaid Cymru. Ym 1936, ynghyd â'r bardd, llenor a hanesydd Saunders Lewis (1893-1985) a'r gwleidydd, awdur a gweinidog y Bedyddwyr Lewis Valentine (1893-1986), cynllwyniodd i losgi'r ysgol fomio ym Mhenyberth, Pen Llŷn, am ba weithred y'i carcharwyd am naw mis yng ngharchar Wormwood Scrubs.
