This series of records includes photographs, photostats and photocopies. Much of the material consists of facsimiles of manuscripts and archives in other libraries and record offices. There is also, however, material of which the original is in private hands. A point to be reflected on is that the boundary between manuscripts and facsimiles has become very indistinct since the arrival of cheap copying machines and printers. While authors' typescripts or carbons have long been accepted as manuscripts, today a photocopy or print may have the same potential status as an author's holograph.

Catalogue descriptions for items bearing NLW Facs numbers, received or processed at NLW after September 1996, will appear as separate records in the catalogue, and will therefore not form part of this archival structure.
