The earliest documents pre-date the establishment of the New Welsh Review as the archive contains various accumulated papers.
The New Welsh Review is a quarterly literary magazine, established in June 1988 following the demise of The Anglo-Welsh Review. The journal features original fiction and poetry, critical articles, and reviews of books and the arts by both established writers and new talent. It is a platform for Welsh writing in English, though its content and contributors also reflect a wider cosmopoliton outlook.
The New Welsh Review is published with the financial support of the Welsh Books Council and the Arts Council of Wales, with additional sponsorship from Aberystwyth University and the University of Glamorgan. The journal is also supported by the English Language Section of the Welsh Academy and the University of Wales Association for the Study of Welsh Writing in English.
Belinda Humfrey was the Review’s first editor in 1988, and she was succeeded by Michael Parnell, who died within months of becoming editor in 1991. Robin Reeves was appointed editor of the journal in 1991, followed by Victor Golightly (2001-2002), and most recently Francesca Rhydderch (2002-).

Er i'r syniad o sefydlu cymdeithas genedlaethol i lenorion Cymru gael ei drafod cyn 1939 fe gododd ei ben eto rhwng 1956 a 1958 mewn sgyrsiau rhwng Bobi Jones a Waldo Williams. Ar ôl i'r ddau drafod nifer o enwau posibl gwahoddwyd cnewyllyn o lenorion i Westy'r Marine, Aberystwyth, ar 3 Ebrill 1959 i drafod y syniad o sefydlu Yr Academi Gymreig. Yn enw Bobi Jones y gyrrwyd y gwahoddiadau gwreiddiol a hynny at Kate Roberts, Gwenallt, Waldo, Aneirin Talfan Davies, Pennar Davies a Thomas Parry. Awgrymodd yr hanner dwsin hyn y dylid ychwnaegu enwau Euros Bowen, Islwyn Ffowc Elis, Alun Llywelyn-Williams a John Gwilym Jones at y rhestr. Ystyriwyd y cyfarfod cyntaf hwnnw, a'r ail ar 5 Medi 1959, yn gyfarfodydd 'rhag-bwyllgor' i'r Academi Gymrieg, cymdeithas gyfyngedig o bedwar ar hugain o lenorion. Yng Ngwesty'r Parc, Caerdydd y cynhaliwyd cyfarfod swyddogol cyntaf yr Academi Gymreig a hynny ar 22 a 23 Ebrill 1960. Yn y cyfarfod cyntaf hwn yr etholwyd G. J. Williams yn llywydd, Iorwerth Peate yn gadeirydd, Bobi Jones yn ysgrifennydd a Gwilym R. Jones yn drysorydd. Yn yr un cyfarfod penderfynwyd sefydlu'r cylchgrawn Taliesin dan olygyddiaeth Gwenallt.
Dewiswyd yr enw 'Cymreig' yn hytrach na 'Chymraeg' oherwydd bod y rhai a oedd yn y 'rhag-bwyllgor' cyntaf oll yn awyddus i weld yr Academi, unwaith y byddai wedi cael ei thraed dani, yn mynd i gyfeiriadau eraill gan gynnwys croesawu llenorion Saesneg Cymru i'w rhengoedd. Ni ddigwyddodd hynny am bron i ddeng mlynedd. Ar 10 Ebrill 1968 y cafwyd cyfarfod ar y cyd â nifer o lenorion Eingl-Gymreig yn Abertawe pryd y penderfynwyd y byddid yn sefydlu adran iaith Saesneg i'r Academi ond gan gadw'r enw Academi Gymreig gan nad oedd modd ei gyfieithu i'r Saesneg.
Dau weithgaredd cyntaf yr Academi oedd cynnal cynadleddau a sefydlu'r cylchgrawn Taliesin. Aethpwyd ymlaen i drefnu cyfres o gyfieithiadau i'r Gymraeg o glasuron Ewropeaidd, geiriadur Saesneg-Cymraeg yr Academi, a'r cynllun clasuron i drefnu ailgyhoeddi nifer o glasuron llenyddiaeth Gymraeg. Yn ogystal â hyn mae'r Academi'n trefnu gweithgareddau eraill megis nosweithiau i goffáu awduron, cynadleddau ac ymweliadau rhyngwladol, teithiau llenyddol, gwobrau a chystadleuthau a chyrsiau preswyl ar wahanol agweddau o ysgrifennu creadigol.
Parhaodd yr Academi yn gorff annibynnol ond dechreuodd dderbyn nawdd Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru tua 1977 a'i galluogodd i benodi staff llawn amser a gadarnhaodd y twf a fu yn ogystal â chychwyn cynlluniau newydd. Rhai a fu ynghlwm â gweinyddu'r ochr Gymraeg oedd Gwerfyl Pierce Jones, Gwynn ap Gwilym Ann Beynon a Sian Ithel.
Ym 1998 enillodd yr Academi y cytundeb gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru i sefydlu Asiantaeth Lenyddiaeth Genedlaethol. Bellach mae'r Academi, ar ei wedd newydd ac ehangach, yn gweinyddu cynllun Awduron ar Daith Cymru, amrywiaeth o Gynlluniau Preswyl i awduron, prosiectau datblygu a Sgwadiau 'Sgwennu i Bobl Ifainc, ac mae'n cynnig cymorth i'r rhai hynny sy'n trefnu eu rhaglenni llenyddol eu hunain. Er mwyn cyflawni'r gwaith hwn mae gan yr Academi swyddfeydd yng Nghaerdydd a swyddogion maes sy'n gweithio yng Ngogledd a Gorllewin Cymru. Mae'r Academi yn hyrwyddo ei digwyddiadau ei hun ac yn cyhoeddi A470, cylchgrawn deufisol sy'n llawn newyddion llenyddol o bob cwr o Gymru. Mae'r Academi hefyd yn rhedeg cyrsiau, cystadlaethau (gan gynnwys Cystadleuaeth Farddoniaeth Ryngwladol Caerdydd), cynadleddau, teithiau gan awduron, ymweliadau cyfnewid rhyngwladol, digwyddiadau ar gyfer ysgolion, darlleniadau, perfformiadau llenyddol a gwyliau ac mae'n cynrychioli buddiannau awduron Cymru ac ysgrifennu yng Nghymru o fewn ffiniau'r wlad a thu hwnt. Mae'n gweithio ar y cyd â Thŷ Newydd, y ganolfan breswyl i awduron ger Cricieth.
Mae rhaglen gyhoeddi'r Academi yn cynnwys Taliesin, cylchgrawn llenyddol chwarterol yn y Gymraeg, y New Welsh Review, prif gylchgrawn llenyddol Cymru yn Saesneg (ar y cyd â Chymdeithas Prifysgolion Cymru),yCydymaith i Lenyddiaeth Cymru a'r Oxford Companion to the Literature of Wales, Geiriadur yr Academi, ac amryw o gyfieithiadau. Gyda chefnogaeth y Loteri, mae'r Academi wrthi ar hyn o bryd yn gweithio ar y Gwyddoniadur Cymreig cyntaf, a fydd yn ymddangos yn y Gymraeg ac yn y Saesneg yn 2002.
Golygodd y datblygiadau hyn gryn dipyn o newidiadau yn strwythr yr Academi. Nid yw ei haelodaeth yn gyfyngedig i gylch bychan o lenorion; bellach mae gan y ddwy Adran tua tri chant o aelodau llawn rhyngddynt a chyfanswm hyd yn oed yn uwch o aelodau cysylltiol neu gefnogwyr. Erbyn hyn enw swyddogol Yr Academi Gymreig yw Yr Academi Gymreig/The Welsh Academy, a'i henw gweithredol yn y ddwy iaith yw Academi, ac fe'i disgrifir fel 'cymdeithas genedlaethol sy'n hyrwyddo awduron a llenyddiaethau Cymru'.
Mae gan yr Academi Brif Weithredwr, pedwar o staff amser-llawn a nifer o staff rhan-amser. Fe'i llywodraethir gan Fwrdd Rheoli; daw aelodau'r Bwrdd o blith aelodaeth yr Academi ei hun, cyrff sydd mewn partneriaeth â hi, awdurdodau lleol, cymdeithasau i awduron y mae eu gwaith yn berthnasol i amcanion yr Academi, y cyfryngau a byd masnach. Bydd aelodau o'r Bwrdd yn gwasanaethu am dair blynedd ac etholir neu cadarnheir yr aelodau gan gyfarfod cyffredinol blynyddol y Gymdeithas. Mae gan y Bwrdd gyd-gadeiryddion. Yn ogystal â'r Bwrdd Rheoli, mae gan yr Academi Bwyllgor Aelodau a ffurfiwyd yn unswydd i ofalu am faterion sy'n ymwneud â'r aelodau. Mae gan y Pwyllgor hwn ddwy adran (un yr un ar gyfer y ddwy iaith), ac etholir hwn hefyd gan gyfarfod cyffredinol blynyddol y Gymdeithas. Mae pwyllgor yr aelodau yn cysylltu ac yn cyd-drafod gyda'r Bwrdd trwy'r cyd-gadeiryddion.
