The estate comprised the manor and lands once in possession of Much Wenlock Priory, Shropshire. In July 1545 Henry VIII granted the site of the priory and demesne lands in Much Wenlock to Augustine of Augustini, who sold them to Thomas Lawley in October 1545. In 1600 the Crown granted the manor in fee to Thomas Lawley and Robert Lawley. Robert relinquished his claim in 1610. Thomas died in 1622 and was succeeded by his son, Sir Edward Lawley (d. 1623), whose daughter and heir, Ursula, married Sir Roger Bertie. She was succeeded by her son Robert Bertie (d. 1698), who left the manor to Thomas Gage, son of his half-sister Elizabeth (nee Penruddock). Thomas Gage (created Viscount Gage 1720), sold the manor, Blakeway Farm and a messuage at Lawley’s Cross in 1713/14 to Sir John Wynn, a kinsman of the Berties. Much Wenlock was included in the rentals of Sir John Wynn, 1717-1718.
