Ivan Monckton was brought up on the border between Staffordshire and Shropshire, and was a Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) activist in Wales from 1978 until at least 1993. He has been a member of both the TGWU General Executive Committee and the Agricultural and Allied Workers (AAW) National Trade Group General Executive Committee. He first joined the TGWU while working for the Forestry Commission, and subsequently became a shop steward, a branch secretary, and Chairman of the Mid-Wales District Committee. He is also a member of the Labour Party, and in 1999 he was appointed to the Board of the Housing Corporation by Housing Minister Hilary Armstrong. He is also a member of the Radnor Local Access Forum, as well as the Health and Safety Executive's agricultural industry advisory committee, and he is a TGWU representative on the Agricultural Wages Board for England and Wales. In addition, he owns a second-hand book shop in Presteigne, Radnorshire, and he has written numerous articles about farming, conservation, dogs, politics, nitrates, additives and hormones, as well as many other subjects.
