Scope and content
These letters mainly date from 1848-1861, and mostly relate to Messrs Hughes & Roberts’s private clients, although some relate to public duties, and probably include some of the contents of the bundles missing from SC 1, above. The bulk of the letters are from the same period, 1840s and 1850s, with a few earlier and later strays.

System of arrangement
The contents of original bundles are in their original order, and the bundles arranged chronologically. However it is clear from the ingrained dirt, tar and footprints on many of the individual items that they spent some time on a floor in considerable disorder, and despite some bundles, e.g. SC 2/4, perhaps preserving the remnants of some original bundle, it is also clear from the disordered dates that the current arrangement merely preserves the order in which the letters were collected and bundled on being retreived from the floor. The 1842 and 1846 letters, now scattered among most bundles, are the only items in this series to have perished by damp along the top edge, suggesting they spent time together in annual bundles before being dispersed.
