Scope and content
Miniature portrait in a locket of King Charles II presented in 1660 to Col. Laugharne, defender of Pembroke Castle in the Civil War. To the miniature is attached a piece of vellum with the following note: 'This little portrait must ever be considered as the highest approbation from the sovereign to his subject: this was given by King Charles the second to Colonel Laugharne who so gallantly defended Pembroke Castle in the time of the wars in Wales, as a token of his confidence on that occasion; and should ever be treasured by the Laugharnes, and those that might hereafter inherit that property, as a memorable trophy of such an event: Ostentare jugulum pro capita alterius'.
