Biographical history
The county of Merionethshire, later part of the county of Gwynedd, was divided into commotes, in turn composed of a number of parishes. The commote originated as medieval unit of administration, but was used into the 19th century for electoral registration. Parishes were required to maintain registers of those eligible for jury duty and to provide these to the Court of Quarter Sessions. Ardudwy Is Artro included the parishes of Llanaber, Llanenddwyn, and Llanelltud, Ardudwy Uwch Artro included Beddgelert, Ffestiniog, Llanbedr, Llandanwg, Llanfair, Llanfrothen, Maentwrog, Trawsfynydd. Tal-y-bont included Dolgellau , Llanegryn, Llanfachreth. Ystumanner included Pennal and Tal-y-llyn. The commote of Mawddwy was created in the sixteenth century.
