Scope and content
Title deeds of the estate of Main or Tre Main in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, 1545-1684. The files relate to miscellaneous arable lands, and to various houses and lands named Maes y Bont, Maes y Tir Newydd, Gro Meredith Lloyd, The Long Leasow, Y Ty yn y Tyr Calch, Y Wyg, Y Borva Newydd, and the capital messuage of Main, with Y Ty yn y Cwm and another unnamed messuage. The deeds show that estate was purchased by Richard Hunt, a Shrewsbury draper, between 1609 and 1617, and sold by his descendants to Owen Williams of Ystumcolwyn, Montgomeryshire, in 1676. Prior to these purchases, former owners of the properties included the descendants of John Goch, Ieuan ap Me’dd ap Ll’n ap Tuder, Edward ap David ap Ll’n ap Tuder, David Lloyd ap John ap Ieuan ap Owen, Howell ap William, Me’dd David ap Howell and his brothers, Owen Lloyd, Owen David Lloyd and William Benyon. The deeds also show the survival of the mediaeval field system of strips or parcels of land within larger fields at the start of the seventeenth century.
