Biographical history
There are various reasons for the presence of lordship and manorial records in the Wynnstay estate papers. The castle of Ruthin and lordship of Dyffryn Clwyd were granted to the de Grey family by Edward I. Ruthin was the administrative centre of courts held under the supervision of the stewards of Dyffryn Clwyd, who included Simon Thelwall and members of the Salesbury family. The Myddelton family of Chirk purchased the castle of Ruthin in 1632 and acquired stewardship of the lordship in 1635. The manors of Maenan, Arwystli and Cyfeiliog, Talerddig, Cynllaith Owain, Much Wenlock and others had come into the ownership of Gwydir and Wynnstay through inheritance, marriage or purchase. Manorial records from Spalding and Newark derive from the work of Henry Wynn, solicitor general to Queen Henrietta Maria.
