Between 1946 and 1949 the Local Government Boundary Commission examined the local government areas in Wales and the electoral arrangements for the principal areas, looking in detail at options for the amalgamation of counties and at the question of granting county borough status to Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport and Swansea.
