Evans was deputy leader of the 1953 British Everest expedition, led by John Hunt; the letter was written two months after Evans's unsuccessful attempt to reach the summit of Everest with Tom Bourdillon on 26 May 1953, three days before Tenzing and Hillary's ascent.
