History

For many years the members of Llanwrtyd chapel worshipped at various dwelling houses in the area, including a house called Maesygwaelod. However, it is believed that the first chapel in Llanwrtyd was built around 1693 as that is the date on the deed for the chapel. This remained as the chapel until 1758 when the building caught fire and a new chapel had to be erected. In 1837, the chapel was rebuilt, again on the same site, despite attempts to obtain land nearer the village. However, eventually a piece of land that was nearer and that was larger was acquired and a new chapel was built and opened in 1868. Up until 1842, Llanwrtyd formed one pastorate with Troedrhiwdalar.
