Many letters discuss the tenancies and property repairs on the Gogerddan estates, land drainage at Borth, the payment of accounts and bills, subscriptions to local schools, Aberystwyth shipping, chief rents, crown rents, tithes, poor rates, administration of the poor law, enclosures, the occupation and management of sheepwalks on the Gogerddan and Wynnstay estates, manorial rights in Genau’r-glyn and in the crown manors of Perfedd and Cyfoethybrenin, illicit turf cutting and poaching. Specific topics include the leases on the Gogerddan Arms, Ponterwyd, Our Lady’s Mill in Aberystwyth and Cwmcynfelyn; building at Gogerddan, Borth, Llandre, Tal-y-bont and Derwenlas from 1852; Cardiganshire elections, 1852, 1859; grants of land for the nonconformist chapels at Goginan, Blaendyffryn, Ponterwyd Derwenlas, Borth and Tal-y-bont, from 1854; Machynlleth Agricultural Society from 1856; the mortgage to Hart Logan [of Montreal], from 1857; the development of the Aberystwith and Welsh Coast Railway, from 1861; and mining at Esgair Hir, Bryn-yr-afr, Troedrhiwsebon, Grogwynion, Cwm Darren, East Darren, South Darren, etc. from 1880.
