Scope and content

Some seventy letters, 1771-90, from Dr Richard Price to Sir William Petty, 2nd earl of Shelburne, with related notes and memoranda. The letters and memoranda relate mainly to public finance, notably the National Debt, the Sinking Fund, and taxation. Other topics include the war with the American colonies, to which Richard Price was strongly opposed. Also included is a catalogue of the material, entitled 'Contents of a packet marked letters and other papers from the Revd Dr Price', compiled, c. 1794, by 'S. P.' with later pencilled notes of subsequent additions to the collection (MS 23291E, ff. 1015).
