The letters are mainly from T. Lloyd Edwardes of Lampeter, solicitor, to Mrs Davies, 1884-1889. They also include a letter of attorney from John Jones of Pentre, Tregaron, saddler, appointing Rev. Octavius Davies his attorney in the matter of the trustees of the will and codicils of Thomas Davies, 1878, a further letter asking him to continue receiving his money, 1881; and a letter from the secretary of the Penygraig Explosion Relief Fund to Mary Jones of Aberdwr, asking for a letter from a minister or gentleman confirming that she remains unmarried and of good conduct as to justify continued relief, 1887.

There were three mining disasters at the Naval Colliery, Penygraig: (i) 4 Dec. 1875, when a flood broke through into the mine, drowning two miners and placing the lives of many others at risk; (ii) 10 Dec. 1880, when a gas explosion killed 101 out of the 106 miners underground at the time; and (iii) 27 Jan. 1884, when another explosion killed a further fourteen men.
