Scope and content

The ledgers contain the accounts between R&E and their clients. R&E probably started to number their ledgers in the mid 1890s, and carried on to the end of the current series in 1988, when some at least of the accounts were carried forward into Morris & Bates's books. The covering dates of many the ledgers overlap, with a number of ledgers in use at the same time. This can result in accounts skipping a ledger. For example, “Messrs Fred. Williams, 6 New Street, and R. D. Jenkins, Black Lion Hotel, both of Talybont” is carried forward from ledger 2, fo. 2, to ledger 4, fo. 341. Many of the volumes have loose papers enclosed.
