Professor J. R. Jones, Swansea, was a prominent philosopher who provided the Welsh Language Society's struggles with a firm philosophical basis in the 1960s. He was born in Pwllheli in 1911 and educated at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Balliol, Oxford. He was employed as a lecturer in philosophy at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, between 1937 and 1952, when he was appointed to the Chair of Philosophy at the University of Wales, Swansea - a post he held until his untimely death in 1970.
