Biographical history
The original committee appears to have been established under the title of Secondary Schools Committee. It was reconstituted under the name of The Joint Advisory Committee by statute at the meeting of the University Court on 23 November 1921 'to deal with matters affecting the conditions of admissions from secondary schools as undergraduates of the University'. In effect this entailed the appointment of examiners for 'A' and 'O' level examinations, prescribing set books for subjects, and receiving reports from University Subject Panels.
In 1977 it was reconstituted again under a new name - The Joint Advisory Committee for Examinations - but with largely the same responsibilities. The Joint Advisory Committee included the Vice-Chancellor as chairman, representatives of the Academic Board, the Welsh Secondary Schools Association, and teaching unions. From 1977 onwards, membership comprised entirely of representatives of the Academic Board and the Welsh Joint Education Committee.
