Composers John Lewis ('Eos Glyn Wyre') and his brother David Lewis were born in Llanrhystud; their father, Lewis Lewis, though a tailor by trade, was himself a keen musician. John Lewis composed hymn tunes and part-songs, one of which, 'Adgyfodiad' was published in the collection of William Harries, Heolyfelin, in 1896. He was better-known, however, as a poet and his works won prizes at several eisteddfodau. David Lewis began to compose at the age of 15, as well as conducting singing classes. He composed a large number of hymn-tunes, some of which were collected and edited by J. T. Rees, and much of his work was published in Y Cerddor Cymreig, Greal y Corau, Y Gerddorfa, and Cronicl y Cerddor.
