Biographical history

Prof. John Fraser (1882-1945) was born in Inverness, Scotland, and educated at the Universities of Aberdeen, Cambridge and Jena. He was Sir John Rhys's successor at Jesus College as Professor of Celtic at the University of Oxford from 1921 until 1945. Edmund Crosby Quiggin (1875-1920), was also a Celtic scholar, born in Cheadle and educated at Cambridge. Between 1898 and 1900, he did research at the Universities of Greifswald and Leipzig, Germany. In 1909, the College in Cambridge founded for him the Munro Lectureship in Celtic. He served in World War I, and died in 1920. In 1937 Quiggin's Poems from the Book of the Dean of Lismore with a Catalogue of the Book and Indexes, edited by J. Fraser, was published.

Archival history

Some of the papers of Professor John Fraser were acquired by Sir Idris Foster, his successor at Jesus College, Oxford.

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

Deposited by Sir Idris Foster in 1978 and converted into a donation by the Reverend Gareth Foster and Mrs Siân Thomas, his nephew and niece, in 1984.

Papers of John Fraser and E. C. Quiggin, relating mainly to the publication of poems from the Book of the Dean of Lismore, [1913]-1937, and including scrapbooks bearing transcripts of poems from the Advocates Library Gaelic Manuscripts and from the Bodleian Library Rawlinson B 477; and six notebooks containing notes on Irish texts, Old Irish grammar, Welsh grammar, Gaelic personal and place names and Gaelic grammar.
