Biographical history

Ivor Thomas Rees was born in Treherbert, the son of a Rhondda miner. He attended Penyrenglyn Infants and Junior Boys' Schools and Porth County Boys' School, before attending the University of Wales, Swansea and the Congregational Memorial College, Brecon. He was ordained in 1956, and served Welsh Independent, English Congregational and United Reformed churches at Port Talbot; Clapham, London; Ewell, Surrey; Manselton, Swansea; and Bamford, Rochdale. He retired to Swansea in 1996, and further developed his interest in researching politics and political history, in particular researching politicians standing as candidates in local and general elections in Wales or with Welsh connections. Ivor T. Rees has published numerous books, including Welsh Hustings 1885-2004: A Who's Who of Parliamentary, European and Assembly Candidates in Wales (Dinefwr: Llandybie, 2005); Saintly Enigma: a biography of Pennar Davies (Tal-y-bont: Y Lolfa, 2011); Clapham Dissenters : from Persecuted Group to Prestigious Congregation (Tal-y-bont: Y Lolfa, 2015); and Daniel Hughes: the sledgehammer pastor (Tal-y-bont: Y Lolfa, 2015). Additionally, his work has featured in a number of journals relating to Welsh political and religious history, including The Welsh Journal of Religious History; Minerva: transactions of the Royal Institution of South Wales; The National Library of Wales Journal; Morgannwg: transactions of the Glamorgan Local History Society; Llafur: the journal of the Society for the Study of Welsh Labour History; Brycheiniog; Gower: journal of the Gower Society; Trafodion Cymdeithas Hanes Bedyddwyr Cymru; Gwent Local History; The Carmarthenshire Antiquary; and the Glamorgan Family History Society Journal.

Donated by the Rev. Ivor T. Rees, 125 Park Way, Sketty, Swansea, in September 1997, March and July 1999. Further donations were received in July 2017, May 2019, and July 2021.

Papers of the Rev. Ivor T. Rees, comprising mainly printed political material, 1928-1997, including election literature and candidates' addresses for British elections from Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and election literature, newsletters and press cuttings relating to minority parties such as the Socialist Party of Great Britain, 1951-1970; National Democratic Party/National Front/British National Party, [c. 1970's]-[1990's], and papers relating to Lt Commander W. G. Boaks, who stood as an independent candidate in many elections between 1951 and 1982, [c. 1970s-1980s]; articles and obituaries relating to politicians and other prominent individuals, [c. 1970s-1990s]; index cards containing details of British Parliamentary candidates who stood in British Parliamentary elections, 1910-1983; together with miscellaneous papers, 1948-1985; newspaper cuttings, 1931-1999 relating to Welsh politics, including the first election for the National Assembly for Wales and electoral candidates in Wales; and election leaflets mostly for the county council elections, 6 May 1999, in Swansea, Sketty, Anglesey, Vale of Glamorgan and Rhonda Cynon Taf.
Additional donations also include papers, 1999-2017, consisting mainly of printed material from web pages, press cuttings, and campaign material and election addresses relating to prominent Welsh politicians both in the Welsh Assembly and UK Parliament; papers, 1885-2018, relating to elections held in Wales and Welsh constituencies from the 19th to the 21st centuries and politicians who have stood as candidates, including in UK Parliamentary elections, Welsh Assembly elections, and European Parliament Elections; a large number of candidates' and politicians' biographies (1885-2018), and questionnaires for candidates standing in various 20th- and 21st- century elections (1997-2017; 2019); and a large number of papers including press cuttings and printed material from web pages relating to UK Parliamentary, Welsh Assembly, and European Parliament elections (1892-2018), including campaign material and election addresses relating to candidates standing in Welsh constituencies; and some typescript copies of Ivor T. Rees' works.

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling

All records donated to the National Library of Wales as part of the 1997 and March and July 1999 deposits have been retained. A significant amount of duplicate material and a small amount of unrelated material from the 2017, 2019, and 2021 donations has been removed. Additionally, a small amount of material from the July 2021 donation has been transferred to NLW, Welsh Political Ephemera Collection.
A CD from the July 2021 addition remains uncatalogued.
