Over sixty letters, 1840-1890, including some transcripts, mostly addressed to George Crawshay, from prominent political figures, reflecting his active rôle in politics, particularly with regard to the 'Foreign Affairs Committee' of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Among the correspondents are John Bright (1) 1854, Richard Cobden (13) 1844-1855, Ralph Waldo Emerson (4) 1847-1848, William Ewart Gladstone (1) 1857, Henry George Grey, 3rd earl Grey (7, including four transcripts) 1858-1880, Lajos Kossuth (1) 1855, John Stuart Mill (1) 1867, and Sir Robert Peel (1) 1846. Also included are eleven letters, 1854-1892, from George Crawshay including letters to Richard Cobden, Henry George Grey, 3rd earl Grey, and Harriet Angelina Urquhart, wife of David Urquhart, and transcripts of a letter from Giuseppe Garibaldi, 1859, and John Ruskin, 1860.
