An album of annotated autographs, photographs and engravings, printed matter, press cuttings, etc., compiled during the years 1858-1881. The volume is almost entirely devoted to persons who were prominent in the literary and musical life of Wales during this period, and it appears from internal evidence to have been well known to the compiler's friends and contemporaries. The autographs are largely in the form of personal entries, recorded mainly at national and other eisteddfodau, but there are also a number of mounted holograph letters, 'cut-out' signatures from holograph letters, and franks. Four hundred letters, 1834-1841, 1847-1848, and undated, relating to Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion y Fenni (Abergavenny Cymreigyddion Society). About half their number are addressed to Thomas Bevan ('Caradawc'), the Society's first secretary. Of the remainder some are addressed to John Evans ('Ieuan ab Gruffydd'), who succeeded Thomas Bevan as secretary, and to the Reverend John Evans, Llanover, who was chairman of the Society for more than one term and secretary from (?) A collection of over 200 books and pamphlets from the library of the donor's husband, the late Rev J. Seymour Rees, Seven Sisters, most of these being typescript volumes (NLW MSS 18628-707). The collection consists of some original work by J. Seymour Rees and his father, John Rees, such as poetry, short stories, essays, biographies, and guide books, much of which was submitted for competition at various national and local eisteddfodau, and volumes of collected material on various topics, including essays, articles and other material on such eminent Welshmen as W. Llewelyn Williams, Daniel Silvan Evans, Sir John Morris Jones, and Rev William Edwards, Groeswen, and on Welsh hymnology, and collections of poetry by D. Emrys James ('Dewi Emrys'), I. D. Hooson, R. Williams Parry, and T. J. Thomas ('Sarnicol'), of prose by 'Sarnicol', W. Llewelyn Williams, O. M. Edwards, and W. J. Gruffydd, and of hymns by H. Elvet Lewis ('Elfed'), J. D. Vernon Lewis, J. R. Davies, Pentyrch, and others, and selections of prose and verse compiled for competition at various national eisteddfodau. In addition to the collection of Elfed's Welsh and English hymns, there are twelve volumes containing some of his prose and verse and material on his life and work. There are also indexes to Y Beirniad, Y Geninen, and Y Geiriadur Bywgraphyddol; typescript copies and cuttings, from periodicals and newspapers, of articles and essays by various persons, and by 'Sarnicol' and J. Seymour Rees in particular; typescript transcripts of several printed books, in particular of collections of hymns published in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; and scrapbooks of newspaper cuttings relating to D. Lloyd George, Dylan Thomas, 'Dewi Emrys', W. Llewelyn Williams, Sir John Morris Jones, 'Elfed', Rev John Evans, Brecon, Rev Jubilee Young, and others. The collection also contains letters to J. Seymour Rees and Mrs. Seymour Rees and a small group of other correspondence. The largest donation of printed books received during the current year was that which the Library was invited to select from the very extensive library of Rev J. Seymour Rees (Dept of Printed Books). It numbered several hundreds of volumes primarily of literary, historical, and theological interest, all in very good condition, and many having been bound by Mr. Rees himself. Additional material from the library of the donor's husband, the late Rev J. Seymour Rees, Seven Sisters. It includes typescript collections of 'Cyfansoddiadau sydd yn fy modloni i' and 'A short anthology of the world's greatest Christian prayers' (NLW MS 19384B); three scrapbooks of typescripts and newspaper cuttings (NLW MSS 19385A, 19386B, 19387C); a typescript copy of 'Casgliad o gyfarwyddiadau i wneuthur hen fwydydd nodweddiadol Gymraeg' by Miss Mati Thomas ('Mati'r Ddôl'), Nanternis, New Quay (awarded the prize at the Treorchy National Eisteddfod, 1928) (NLW MS 19383B); Evan Thomas: Galareb S. Griffiths o Horeb (Castellnewydd-Emlyn, 1960), and J. Lloyd Williams: Byd Natur (Caerdydd, 1924) (Dept of Printed Books). A holograph letter of David Jones (1856-1937), Aberdare, afterwards Independent minister at New Quay, co. Cardigan, and at Scranton, Pa., U.S.A. (NLW MS 18866E, No 246C); and a printed postcard to the donor from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, [March 1965], acknowledging a message of sympathy and good wishes (NLW MS 16726A).

A volume in continuation of Cwrtmawr MS 758 containing fifty holograph letters, postcards, etc., from John Rhys and one holograph letter on his behalf by Elspeth Rhys from Oxford, etc., 1885-1901, to D. Silvan Evans at Llanwrin. Subjects of the correspondence include an interpretation of a text ('Neu vi luossawc yntrydar ....') from the Book of Taliesin, numerous problems of Welsh etymology, a manuscript dictionary discovered by Gwenogvryn Evans at the Bodleian Library, observations on the recipient's dictionary, adjudication on essays [submitted to the London national eisteddfod, 1887], arrangements for meetings of the Tithe Agitation Committee (1887) (of which the writer was Secretary), an address at Bangor, a contribution to Y Traethodydd, the application of J. M[orris] Jones for the lectureship at Bangor [University College], the illness of Dr [Gudbrandur] Vigfússon [at Oxford], an English version of an inscribed englyn at Michaelston-super-Ely, condolence on the recipient's bereavement [i.e. the death of his wife], a gift to the recipient of the writer's Studies in the Arthurian Legend, Mr [E. G. B.] Phillimore's attack on the 'caddishness' of Welsh people and especially of members of the 'Dafydd ab Gwylym Club', the interpretation of the old stones at Wareham, the progress of [J. Morris] Jones's publication of 'Llyfr yr Ancr', the treatment of Wales 'under the rule of Lord Aberdare quite recently' (12 November 1892), letters of congratulations to the writer [on his appointment as Principal of Jesus College, Oxford], the application for the grant to the recipient of a Civil List pension, the election of the recipient to a three years' fellowship of Jesus College, Oxford, the possibility of the grants of Cymmrodorion medals to the writer and the recipient (1897) (with observations on Phillimore's work as editor of the Society's publications), thanks for a new 'Sten [Sioned] (1901), personal, etc. The volume also contains holograph letters and postcards from T. A composite volume of transcripts, biographies and miscellaneous notes almost entirely in the hand of D. Silvan Evans. They include 'Helfa Hawdd ei Hebgor' (published in Y Geninen, 1887, pp. 200-204) (with instructions to the printer in the hand of [John Thomas, 'Eifionydd']); 'Brigant, neu Chware'r Brigant'; 'Canau' or poems in free metres transcribed by H[ugh] B[rython] H[ughes], partly in [18]74; 'Buchedd Marthin Sant'; 'Biographia Cambrensis: Intended as A Supplement to "Enwogion Cymru" by D. Silvan Evans; 'Cronfa Mawddwy ... neu Manion Mawddwy: 1863', largely consisting of rough notes on Welsh etymology, dialect words, place and personal names, etc.; etc. Mounted in the volume is a holograph letter from the Reverend E[benezer] W[ood] Edwards, Ruabon Vicarage to [D. Silvan Evans], [18]64 (date (1820) of birth and christening of [Sir] W[atkin] W[illiams] Wynn). Manuscripts in the Llanover and British Museum collections are quoted as sources of several of the transcripts. The spine is lettered 'Manion Mawddwy'.

Two groups of sermons in the hand of John Davies ('Ioan Dafydd'; 1840-1933), a native of Talgarreg, Cardiganshire, curate of Rhyl, and subsequently public preacher in the diocese of St. Davids. The sermons were preached during the period 1866-83 at Llanfihangel [Abercowin], St. Clears, Mydrim, Llanina, Rhos[[llannerchrugog], Penmon, Llanfaes, Rhyl, etc. Among other material contained in MS. 11131 are a volume of sermons by Henry Lewis Davies, vicar of Cenarth, preached during the period 1838-65 at Tottenhill and Wormegay, Norfolk, and at Troedyraur, Llangoedmore, Llangrannog, Cenarth, and Brongwyn, Cardiganshire, etc.; two sermons in an unidentified hand, [18]82 and undated; and a biographical note by John Davies on Chancellor D. Silvan Evans.
