David Jones's art

The file comprises a typescript copy of an article by Eric Gill entitled 'David Jones', corrected and signed by the author. This article was originally published in Artwork, no. 23 (Autumn 1930), pp. 171-7, and was reprinted in a volume of essays by Eric Gill entitled In a Strange Land (London, 1944), pp. 63-9, and subsequently in Essays by Eric Gill (London, 1947), pp. 147-53.

David Jones's art

The file comprises manuscript notes by Eric Gill entitled 'David Jones' and dated 7 Sept. 1928. These notes form an introduction to his work as an artist and this item is described in a note by Harman Grisewood as being 'an important appreciation for those interested in the Gill/Jones association.'

Emblems, Eric Gill

The file comprises Emblems by Eric Gill, a volume of six wood engravings selected from twelve illustrations made for The Devil's Devices or Control versus Service by Douglas Pepler, 1915. Thirty three copies of this, the second edition, were printed at Ditchling, February 1916. The volume is inscribed by David Jones 'from Eric Gill and Hilary Pepler (the printer of this work) circa 1921, Ditchling common, Sussex'. It has been numbered 'No. 3 Eric Gill'.

The file includes documents of James Jones including papers relating to his will, a letter from Eric Gill, 1938, papers relating to his service and retirement from the Christian Herald, letters from the London Friendly Association, 1930-1931, copy of letter from James Jones to D Lloyd George, 1919, with letters to and from Paget Baxter, manager of the Christian Herald company.

The file includes documents of James Jones including his temperance pledge, 1898, two certificates of admission to the office of a lay reader, 1905, and 1941, newspaper cuttings, testimonals to James Jones and Ann Bradshaw, 1882-1888, programme for a concert at Holywell, 1882, a copy of a new testament, a copy of a missal given to David Jones, and a wood engraving by Eric Gill, 1944.

Sketches and postcards

The file comprises two copies of a map or game labelled 'David Jones, Umpire', a sketch of a ship by David Jones, a drawing of Conway castle by T. Wood, a sketch of a design for a chimney kettle handle possibly by Eric Gill, a post card of sculpture of St Sebastian by Eric Gill, a manuscript salvage map dated 1917, and miscellaneous printed engravings and pictures. There are also postcards to David Jones from his father James Jones, 'Mike' (1946), Arthur [Giardelli, 1956], and 'Kathrin'.
