The file includes an early book prospectus [c. 1837]; early journal articles, 1856-1902, including, by Charles Dickens, 'The Renowned Dog Caesar' in All the Year Round, 9 May 1863; and more recent notes, pedigrees, advertisements, letters and cuttings, 1932-1978, featuring canine anecdotes, breed characteristics, exports, working dogs, sport, shows, famous dogs, canine literature, illustrations and cats.

The series comprises whole issues, individual pages, scrap books and loose cuttings of newspapers and magazines, 1816-1993, covering the biology of breeding, breed types, care, welfare, training, dog-loving celebrities, showing, clubs, animal photography, dogs and the law, working dogs, terriers, spaniels, anecdotes and a few, non-canine topics.

The series comprises mainly printed pamphlets and circulars, in some cases accompanied by relevant letters and press cuttings, concerning British and foreign dog shows, 1901-1979, administration of the Kennel Club and individual breed clubs, 1931-1997, and advertisments for books, journals and postcards, 1934-1987. Additional material includes obituaries and tributes to Doggie Hubbard, 2000 and 2003.
