A notebook of Edward Lhuyd, written 1698 (see pp. 10, 52), containing details of monumental inscriptions in Llanboidy (p. 6), Defynnog (p. 7), Llanfihangel (Mongomeryshire) (p. 17), Trawsfynydd (p. 31), Llangadog (p. 53), Herefordshire (pp. 58, 72), Llanllywenfel (p. 75), Llanafan Fawr (p. 77) and Llandanwg (p. 89); sketches of stone crosses (pp. 59-61, 73), stone circles (pp. 27, 44, 94, 99, 100) and further stones (pp. 2, 9, 42-3, 56), lime pit fossils (pp. 14, 44, 54, 62, 84-5, 145), a window (p. 3), Llangorse lake (p. 36), and the shore by Barry Island (pp. 37-8); and details of tombstones and their epitaphs (pp. 4, 11, 13, 39, 47, 63, 69, 81). The volume also includes notes relating to manuscripts and their owners (pp. 65-74), etc. An autograph note on p. 120 states: 'Mr. Edward Lhwyd was born at Lappiton parish, his nurse is now [?1698] living at Krew green (where he was nurs'd) 9 yre of her at Mrs. Judith Cowfield at Lappiton / his nurse says he is 41 years old 3 days before Michaelmas last according to Catherine Bowen his nurse to ye best of her memory'.

David Jones letters to Saunders Lewis

Fifty-three letters and cards, 1948-1974, from the artist and writer David Jones to Saunders Lewis, discussing his creative work, the Welsh language, aspects of Welsh and Classical antiquity and literature, the Roman Catholic faith and culture in general. Drawing on f. 51 and inscriptions on ff. 10-13, 29 verso, 36 verso, 44 verso. Also included are three letters, 1937, from David Jones to Margaret Lewis, written during her husband's imprisonment (ff. 91-3 verso) and a copy of a speech by David Jones, delivered in absentia when he was awarded the honorary degree of DLitt by the University of Wales in 1960 (ff. 21-7).

Katheryn of Berain

A volume containing an offprint of Sir John Ballinger, 'Katheryn of Berain, a study in North Wales family history', Y Cymmrodor, 40 (1929), 1-42, which was given to R. D. Roberts by the author in 1929 in recognition of the help he received while correcting the proofs (see inside front cover, ff. i verso-iv). Genealogical and biographical notes on the Salesbury and related families, [c. 1934], in the hand of R. D. Roberts, occur on ff. ii verso-iv, pp. 2, 45-54 and genealogical tables I-III, together with press cuttings, 1930-1933, relating to Katheryn of Berain and Mrs Hester Piozzi tipped in on pp. 55-56, photographs of Plas Berain, Llanefydd, Denbighshire (3), 1906-1923, pasted on f. iv verso and inside back cover, and cuttings from William R. Owen, Catalogue of the loan collection of Welsh antiquities ... (Liverpool, 1902) tipped in on f. viii (see MS 13910B). Letters to R. D. Roberts from Sir John Ballinger (6), 1928-1929, and A. Some fifty letters, 1837-1841, to Henry Evans ('Harri Ddu o Ddyfed'), secretary of the Cambrian Society, Cardiff, on subjects of Welsh antiquarian and Cymreigyddion interest; together with notes gathered by Evans and verses by or concerning him. The correspondents include Edward Copleston, bishop of Llandaf (2) 1838, Thomas Phillipps, Middle Hill (7) 1837-39, Thomas Price ('Carnhuanawc') (3) 1837, Rice Rees, Llandovery (6) 1837-9, and William Williams, Aberpergwm (3) 1837-39.

A collection of historical tracts transcribed by John Thomas from manuscripts of Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir') - a transcript of the Charter granted by Henry VII to the inhabitants of North Wales, 1507; a translation of De Bardis Britannicis Dissertatio, 1760; extracts from correspondence concerning Welsh antiquities between Lewis Morris, Edward Richard, Dr Philips, Blaenpant, and Samuel Pegge, 1759-1760; a transcript of Sir John Wynne's History of the Gwydir Family; and a copy of the pedigree of the families mentioned in that work brought down to 1764, and taken from a manuscript in the possession of Lewis Owen, curate of Llanllechid.
