Prescription book, 1892-1899, of D. Thomas, Chemists (Cardiff) Ltd, which includes names of patients and dates alongside the formulae. The front cover bears the inscription 'Register of Members' (presumably of the Pharmaceutical Society). Inserted at the beginning of the volume is a typescript letter, dated 8 March 1950, from D. Thomas, Chemists of Cardiff to the National Library of Wales and inserted at the back of the volume (ff. 89-90 verso) is a typescript letter, dated 10 July 1902, from the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, with a printed copy of an extract from the London Gazette relating to new Society regulations passed, 5 June 1902, at Whitehall. Also included are medicinal and veterinary recipes inside the frontispiece and on f. i, together with rough memoranda on ff. 87 verso-88.

A seventeenth and early eighteenth century manuscript of Welsh and English poetry, medical recipes, prophecies attributed to Myrddin and Taliesin, triads, and later additions of a miscellaneous nature. The volume is in several hands, and some of the additions seem to be in the autograph of Richard Wiliams, soap boiler, of Abergavenny. According to a note on the cover (see 561, below) it belonged to the Catholic Chapel, Abergavenny, and much of the contents is of Catholic interest. The free-metre poems include a satire upon legal proceedings (in a mixture of Welsh and English), a dialogue in two hundred and twenty-three stanzas of 'triban' metre between a Catholic and a Protestant, a poem consoling members of the Holy Church in persecution, a poem in 'triban' metre by Henry Williams, a Christmas carol, and an elegy on the death of David Lewis, Catholic martyr, 1679. The poems in strict metres contain 'cywyddau' by Sion y Kent, Ievan Deylwyn, Lewis Glynn Kothi, Ievan Tew Brydydd, Robin Du o Fon, Rys Nanmor and others, and a number of 'englynion' in Welsh and English, including satires upon Puritans. The English poems include 'An Hymne on our Saviour Christ's Ascension' and 'An Epitaph vpon the Death of John Pym'. The miscellaneous material at the beginning of the volume includes material of Brecknockshire interest; a presentment of Popish recusants in Monkstreet ward in the town of Abergavenny, 1709; medical recipes; and a precept relating to the House of Correction in Brecknockshire, 1670.

A volume containing sermons and notes of sermons written by James Walters, Saron, Llangeler, co. Carmarthen, 1833-1834, together with a few medical prescriptions and memoranda. Two of the sermons bear the name of James Lewis, Laugharne.

An account of proceedings against [ ] Wrainham for presenting to the King a book called 'Revewe and Revivor of the Report of the Mr. of Rolls Phillips and the decree of my lord Chancellor', c. 1610; veterinary and medical recipes; and a tract entitled 'Shorte Articles by way of Instruccon concerninge the Dutye Office and Jurisdiction of the High Admirall of England collected out of the Lettres Pattents of that Office'.

The contents, pagination in brackets, include a copy of a notice relating to the proclamation in 1816 of the holding of a bardic convention at Pen rhiw'r gwydd in the cantref of Garth Mathrin, co. An eighteenth century manuscript consisting of miscellaneous material in the hand of the Reverend Edward Gamage [rector of the parish of St. Athan, co. Glamorgan, 1717-1734] with additions in later eighteenth century hands (see TLLM, tt. 106-07; IM, t. 309; and IMCY, tt. 58-60, 68, 171). In Edward Gamage's own hand are transcripts of Welsh strict- and free-metre poems by Thomas Morgan 'o Dilla garw', Hopkin y Gwaedd 'o Fargam', Rob. Tho[ma]s 'o Sant y Bryd', Thomas Leyshon o'r Prysg', Miles W[illia]m, Thomas W[ilia]m 'o Dregolwyn', Thomas Llewelyn, vicar of Llancarvan, Dafydd Thomas 'o blwyf y Bettws', and Llewelyn ab Iefan, a copy of a letter in Welsh, 23 November 1726, from the said Edward Gamage himself from Sant Athan, to Llewelyn ab Iefan of the parish of Llangrallo [co. Glamorgan], poet, in reply to a request for genealogical information relating to the Stradling family, and, at the reverse end of the volume, 'A Continuation of ye Exposition of ye Church Catechism for ye use of ye Children of ye Parish of Lantwitt Major by E. Gamage, Lecturer and Catechist there', a recipe for a dog bite, and ? sermon notes. Four imperfect, printed leaves from a ? seventeenth century edition of metrical psalms with prayers for use in private houses have been bound in at the end of the volume.

An incomplete manuscript of texts and tables on astrology and witchcraft and medical and other recipes in the hand of 'Dauidd Dafis', 1804. A commonplace book of the Reverend Thomas Richards (1754-1837), vicar of Darowen containing 'An Extract out of Bishop [William] Beveridge's Exposition on the XXXIX Articles of the Church of England'; household and medical recipes from printed sources; transcripts by Mary Richard [Darowen] of letters, undated, from D[avid] Richards, Llansilin to the Reverend David Hughes, rector of Llanfyllin, and [ ] (Bible Association meetings at Llansilin); autobiographical data by Thomas Richards, 1754-1819; a topographical dictionary of English and Welsh counties; a transcript of the Thirty-Nine Articles of Faith of the Church of England; a journal and account book of Thomas Richards, 1782-92 (with gaps) (incorporating notes of sermons by D[aniel] Rowland, Llangeitho); poetry by Cadwalader Dafydd ('o Lanymowddwy') and David Ellis ('y Gof' ? One of the sources quoted by Mary Richards is a manuscript of Sir Thomas Llwyd, 'Person Cemes, Sir Drefaldwyn'. The outside upper cover is inscribed '1825 Tithe Book'.
