The following seven volumes contain Walter de Grey Birch's manuscript descriptions of Coed Coch Deeds and Documents 1-1831, with an index of the personal names and place-names contained in them.

Pedigree Roll (2' x 5' 81/4") of the Wynne family of Coed Coch, from Marchudd ab Cynan, 'chieftain of Uwch Dulas, co. Denb., Lord of Brynffanigl and Founder of the 8th. Noble Tribe of North Wales and Powys, living A.D. 850', to Edward Henry John Wynne, born 28 Nov. 1893, with ancestral quarterings at the bottom. Contains dates of birth and death, titles and offices held etc. Royal blue silk backing. Encased in a brown cylindrical tin.

Orderly Book of Major John Holland of Teyrdan, relating to the Isdulas Volunteers, commanded by Lieut-Col. Wynne of Garthewin, from 1 Aug. 1804, to 16 Aug. 1808, and to the West Denbigh Local Militia, composed of the Isdulas and Ruthin Volunteers, commanded by Lieut-Col. Forbes of Bodnod, from 1 Sept. 1808, to 27 Aug., 1812. The MS., written in a very find hand, with copperplate title-pages and headings, the work of P. Williams, Ruthin, consists of general and regimental orders, copies of letters, and records of courts-martial, promotions, etc. Quarto, bound in vellum.

A parcel containing (a) A large number of receipts (in English and Latin) for chief-rents paid for lands in co. Denbigh, between the years 1613 and 1827, together with a few letters and memoranda relating thereto. (b) A copy of a writ of George III, dated April 1784, commanding John Wynne, Esq., Dorothy his wife, and John Wynne of Rhos, Esq., to appear, under penalty of £100, at the next Great Sessions for co. Denbigh, to be held at Wrexham, to answer a charge against them by William Davies and Elizabeth his wife. (c) "A particular of the estates of John Wynne, Esq., at the re-letting, Oct. 1801." The names of the tenements, of their occupiers, and of the parishes and counties in which they were situated, are listed. (d) A supplement page to the Chester Courant of 29 November, 1854, giving a detailed account of the Battle of Inkermann, with lists of casualties, etc. On the back are manuscript notes relating to officers killed and wounded. English and Latin.

A bundle of papers labelled : "From Nanhoron, June, 1850. J. Ll. Wynne. Important", with the following note by Mr. Hughes of Kinmel : "These documents refer principally to the arrangement of a marriage between John Holland, junior, of Teirdan and Miss Margaret Ellis of Plas Ucha, etc." Besides the Articles of Agreement, dated November, 1775, there are letters relating to the match and to various legal and estate matters, including some in Welsh from Lewis Anwyl, grandfather of Margaret Ellis, together with rentals, lists of property and of debts, receipts, and other accounts.

A packet of sixteen papers, labelled "Letters relating to my detention and escape from the Old Capitol Prison at Washington, 1863, Jan 27th". This note is in the autograph of General Edward Wynne of Coed Coch, who, when a captain in the Grenadier Guards and stationed in Canada during the American Civil War, obtained leave to visit the scene of operations as a spectator; he was arrested as a spy, but succeeded in escaping and returning to his regiment. The documents include: (a) An account, in General Wynne's autograph, of his capture, detention, and escape. (b) A typewritten copy of the above, with a further note by Mrs Brodrick. (c) Various letters and copies of letters in connection with the affair, including autograph letters of E. B. Malet, afterwards Sir Edward Malet, KCB, who was then a youthful member of Lord Lyons's staff at the British Embassy in Washington. (d) Extract from an American newspaper; relating to Wynne's escape. (e) "Sales a/c goods sold by order & for a/c of Lt. Col. E. Wynne, G.G.", and other accounts. (f) A printed booklet of 20 pages, entitled Letters from a Maryland Mail Bag. The so-called letters are in the form of verses relating to various aspects of the American Civil War.

Two copies of an offprint of the article "Holland Family in Wales", from Archaeologia Cambrensis, Series III, Vol. 13, 1867. On one copy (a) is written "With the compliments of the writer", and on the other (b), in a different hand: "From The Revd. W. Holland, Cold Norton, Essex", together with the following note by [Mr.] H[ughes] of K[inmel] - "History and General Pedigree of the Holland family in Wales, published in the Archaeologia Cambrensis, very imperfect". This copy has numerous MS. notes.

"Pedigree shewing children of Hannah Roberts, daughter of Ellis Roberts of Vriog, Llanfachreth", with queries. Attached are four letters of John Williams, Trem Hyfryd, Dolgelley, to J. Parry Jones, solicitor, Denbigh, dated 13, 17, 19, and 20 September, 1889, concerning Hannah Roberts's descendants and the descent of the Pennant estate. (The first letter is the original of which no. 3034 is a copy.).

Copy, attested by the Rev. Morris Lloyd, Vicar of Llanelltyd, of an entry in the register of marriages of the parish, recording the marriage of Richard William and Ann Evans, on 11 May, 1810, by William Williams, curate, in the presence of Ellis Williams and Charles Evan.

Letter from John H. Meredith, law clerk, of Bryn Bella, Dolgelley, to J.P. Jones, Esq., giving information concerning the descendants of Hannah Roberts, and noting her relationship to John Williams of Tremhyfryd, Dolgelley. (See No. 3034).

Typewritten copies of fourteen letters found at Pennant, the originals being in the possession of Mrs. Alan Gough, Gelliwig, Pwllheli. Twelve of these are from John Wynne of Coed Coch to Richard Lloyd, esq., 9 Coney Court, Gray's Inn, London, and range between 11 December, 1774, and 24 February, 1778. The thirteenth is from the Rev. Ed. Edwards, Pennant, to his son, the Rev. H. Holland Edwards, a student at Christ Church, oxford, and is dated 20 July, 1778. The last, undated, is from the latter to his father. All the letters relate to personal, family, and business matters.

A packet of seven letters relating to the estate and the heirs of William Doley of Chester, merchant: (1) D. Cox to Mr. Hunt, stating that one John Doley had two sons and one daughter. One son died without issue; the other had an only daughter who married one Sheppard and also had an only daughter, the said Sheppard being (1) then in possession of the estate by virtue of his marriage. Dated : Coleshill, 21 Feb. 1728/9. (2) Thomas Fluitt to Mr. Fluitt, attorney at law in Chester, giving the result of enquiries made concerning the Doley family. Sheppard and Miss Doley had two daughters, of whom one died in infancy and the other married a clergyman in Wales, by whom she had one child, and is since dead. Dated : Birmingham; June 16 1747. (3) Ben. Palmer to Mrs. Fluitt at Mr. Randal Fluitt at Overton near Frodsham, Cheshire. Further information concerning the heirs to the Doley estate, Miss Sheppard married Mr. William Harries, a clergyman, and died leaving one daughter, Jane Ann Eleanor Harries, then about two and a half years old and residing with her father and grandfather at Tregwint in Pembrokeshire. Dated : 16 April 1748. (4) Thomas Fluitt to Mr. Randle Fluitt at Overton near Frodsham (but begins "Hond. Madam'). Matters relating to the Doley estate. Dated : Birmingham, 16 April 1748. (5) Thomas Williams to Mrs. Fluitt at her house in Holywell, Flintshire. Mr. William Harries has moved from Tregwint to Llangharn (sic.) in Carmarthenshire, and has married again. His daughter lives with him. Sends 69lbs of butter at 31/2d per lb Dated : Denbigh, 8 December 1752. (6) Thomas Williams to his cousin [Mrs. Fluitt]. Further information concerning the Doley estate. Should Miss Harries die before attaining her majority, and without issue, then Mrs. Fluitt is the next heir. Dated : Denbigh, 29 June 1753. (7) Philip Pugh to Mr. Thomas Williams in Bull Lane, Denbigh. Miss Harries has eloped with one Captain Wilson, to be married in Scotland. No recovery could be passed on the estate as yet. Dated : Tuglyn, 14 Feb. 1763.

Deed of Sale of Gawen Goodman and Thomas Morries, both of Rythyn, co. Denbigh, gentlemen, to the Bailiffs and Burgesses of Shrewsbury, in consideration of the sum of £20, of a chain of gold weighing 71/2 ounces Troy weight, for the finding of sureties to enter into two bonds of £20 each, as well for the repayment of the said £20 in September, 1590, as for the employing of the said £20 "in makinge of clothes whereby ye poore of... Rythyne may be sett on worke by pinninge and cardinge to labor for their lyvinge accordinge to the good meaninge and devise of the giver of ye said money". Dated 11 May 1588. The document is accompanied by: (i) A letter from R[ichard] Newcome to John L1. Wynne, Esq., Coed Coch, returning the document, which he had copied, and referring to members of the Goodman family etc., dated Cloisters, 8 April 1824; and (ii) a sheet of paper enclosing the document, addressed to "Mr. Edwards", and bearing the note - "Sir, The inclosed was left with me by the late Mr. Wynne for curiosity... W. Totty. 13 Feb. [17]89".
