A collection of a hundred and twenty-one letters and thirteen fragments of letters to and from Benjamin Flower (1775-1829), political writer and Unitarian (DNB, vol. 19, p. 339). The letters span the period 1794 to 1808, the great majority dated 1799 and 1800, and are between Flower and Eliza Gould, whom he married in January 1800. The collection is fullest for the period August to October, 1799 - the period of Flower's imprisonment at Newgate for an alleged libel against Bishop Watson of Llandaff, whose political conduct he had censured in the Cambridge Intelligencer - when almost daily exchanges took place between himself and Miss Gould. For the years following their marriage in 1800, the correspondence is predictably less complete and consists mainly of domestic trivia and concern for one another's health and welfare. In two lengthy letters, 1799, Flower provides a detailed account of his 'past life, ... present situation and ... future prospects'. There are regular references to the difficulties faced by Flower in writing 'paragraphs' for the Cambridge Intelligencer, and, after 1805, to the problems of running a printing business at Harlow. Accounts of contemporary political and literary life are interspersed with personal details, and there is some discussion of the war against France. The later letters also contain many references to their two daughters, Eliza, born 1803, and Sarah, born 1805. English. Formerly George Eyre Evans Bequest MS 375. A manuscript account of an excursion to North Wales and Cheshire, 3-[6] September 1829, by Elizabeth Bower, [of Broxholme House, Doncaster], travelling with her husband John Seddon Bower (f. 1-19).
The couple left Crosby on 3 September and boarded the Prince Llewelyn steam packet at Liverpool (f. 1 verso), sailing along the North Wales coast (ff. 2-5) to Beaumaris (ff. 5-6 verso). They crossed the Menai Bridge (ff. 7-9) and proceeded to Bangor (ff. 9-10 verso), Conway (ff. 12-13 verso) and Chester (ff. 14 verso-18), returning to Liverpool and then Crosby on the [6] September (f. 19). Included are descriptions of Penrhyn Castle, Bangor (f. 11 recto-verso), and Eaton Hall, Chester (ff. 16-18).

A group of fifty-four holograph letters, 1929-1932, from Thomas Jones, Cerrigellgwm[-isa], Ysbyty Ifan, Denbighshire, to Evan Roberts, Llandderfel, Merioneth, relating to the writer's literary and musical pursuits. Some letters refer to the Welsh ancestry of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America. Also included in the collection is a holograph letter, 15 November, 1932, from Einion Jones, Cerrigellgwm-isa, to Evan Roberts, enclosing a pedigree of his father Thomas Jones and a copy of the latter's last poem.

An essay entitled 'Hanes a Gwaith John Jones ('Tudur Llwyd') o'r Weirglodd Gilfach, Plwyf Llanuwchllyn, 1774-1854' by 'Glyn Cothi', i.e. Evan Roberts, Llandderfel, Merioneth. The essay was submitted for competition at a chair eisteddfod at Hen Gapel, Llanuwchllyn, in 1935.

Seventy-six items of correspondence and other papers (letters, postcards, etc.), 1848-1885, almost all from Samuel Roberts, 'S.R.', Conway, to his cousin, David Howell, Machynlleth (Dolguog, Penegoes), and Aberdovey, with one letter to Mrs. Howell and one to the Dolguog family, and one letter, 1884, from [John Roberts] 'J.R.', Conwy, to D[avid] Howell. The subjects touched upon include the Tennessee lands, the death of their Johnstown cousin, Evan Roberts, 1871, autographs, [Crynodeb o] Helyntion Bywyd S.R. (1875) and other works by 'S.R.', his brothers J[ohn] R[oberts] and R[ichard] R[oberts], Y Cronicl, a claim against the U.S. Government in respect of supplies furnished to the army during the war, the library of their late friend the Reverend Edward Hughes, incumbent of Meliden, the assassination of President Garfield, 1881, a visit from the Rt. Hon. The order in which the letters have been bound is not always strictly chronological.

The file includes material on badgers; the ecology of railways, mainly relating to plants; and National Nature Week; one programme features Evan Roberts as a guest speaker.

The file consists of papers relating to Condry's autobiography Wildlife, My Life published in 1995. It comprises a notebook and folder containing outlines of the author's tasks and plan of the book, 1992-1993, captions for photographs, source materials, notes on autobiographical details, natural history, literary activities, local history, Evan Roberts, the Snowdonia botanist, and relevant subjects extracted from a card index, 1947-1995; correspondence, 1952-1993, mainly concerning bird life, old acquaintances in Birmingham, and botany, including a letter from Arthur Chater, 1978, about lichens at the site of Hafod, typescript and printed articles, including a brief biography of Condry, printed leaflets and press cuttings, 1935-1994.

The file comprises a card index, the main sections referring to weather, the shape of the Snowdonia landscape (i.e. geology and scenery), natural history of wild plants and fauna, nature reserves, human history and man's impact on the landscape, various means of access for visitors to the area, miscellaneous entries, including a subsection on Edward Lhuyd, a list of places to visit, and records of photographs and bibliography, 1933-1985. Some entries are accompanied by fuller notes, especially on early Snowdonia naturalists and travellers, literary quotations and references, press cuttings, sketches and correspondence, including letters from Peter Benoit, 1960-1966, Arthur [Chater], 1984, Derek Ratcliffe, 1963, and Evan Roberts, 1962, all mainly concerned with wild plants.

The section comprises loose, handwritten and typed notes, notebook, binders, substantial correspondence, photographs, vegetation samples, circulars, press cuttings, maps, loose printed articles, offprints and information leaflets, accumulated during work in natural history and conservation. The material is indicative of Condry's dedicated and detailed approach to research concerning plants, birds, animals and their different habitats. It is obvious that some of the information which he gathered represented an extension of his personal interests and was used for the compilation of books and articles. -- The main subjects comprise botany, ecology, geology, zoology and the work of other naturalists, such as Evan Price Evans, Mary Richards and Evan Roberts. Regular correspondents include Peter Benoit, E. H. T. Bible, Arthur Chater, Dafydd Davies, Evan Price Evans, Jack Grasse, Dewi Jones, Derek Ratcliffe, Mary Richards, Richard H.
