Jack Lindsay,

Galley proofs, and bound uncorrected proofs containing manuscript amendments, both dated 1967, of the book Meetings with poets by Jack Lindsay (London, 1968). A letter, [1967], from the author in which he discusses the work, and a newspaper cutting, [1990], of an obituary to Jack Lindsay, are enclosed in the front of the volume.

Italia Prize script,

Bound copy of the script of Under Milk Wood, 1954, submitted by the BBC for the Italia Prize, consisting of a parallel French and English text, with notes on names and places, and an introduction; this appears to have been Daniel Jones's personal copy and is signed by him. Also included is a published list, 1955, of winners of the Prix Italia 1954. Under Milk Wood was awarded the Prix Italia for a literary or dramatic radio programme.

'Introduction',

Pencil draft statement of intent, [c. 1928], in Dylan Thomas's hand, headed "Introduction" and written on both sides of a single ruled page from an exercise book. The piece begins, "It is unfortunate that the younger an artist is the less he is credited with being an artist...", and was possibly intended for the journal 'The Era' or a similar project.

In Country Heaven,

Worksheets, [1947x1951], (3 ff.), containing notes in pencil and biro on five pages (ff. 1r-3r, with f. 3v blank), produced by Dylan Thomas whilst composing the unfinished poem 'In Country Heaven'. They comprise a draft of the middle eighteen lines, beginning "Light and his tears glide down together" (f. 1r); a brief word list, the syllable and rhyme scheme, and a draft of two lines from the fifth stanza (f. 1v); a heavily annotated version of the first five stanzas with the syllable and rhyme scheme noted at the end of each line (f. 2r); drafts of the third and fourth stanzas (f. 2v, inverted); and further drafts of the first five stanzas (f. 3r). Also included are photocopies of articles and notes relating to the poem (ff. 4-10). Three stanzas are included in W. Davies and R. Maud ed., Collected poems 1934-1953 (London, 2000).

Papers, 1953-1990, of Glyn Jones, including four letters, 1953-1979, by him to various recipients, and one letter, 1958, to GJ from A. G. Prys-Jones, all of which relate to Dylan Thomas; together with a script, [1979], containing autograph corrections and additions, of a talk by GJ which appears to be an introduction to a performance of 'Under Milk Wood'; and photostat copies of seventeen letters, 1934-1953, to GJ from Dylan Thomas, with typescript copies of the same annotated by GJ and Ralph Maud. Also included is a manuscript draft of a series of five articles by GJ about Dylan Thomas published in The Western Mail, 1958; a postcard, 1958, from Richard Evans praising the articles; a scrapbook belonging to GJ containing articles and papers, 1953-1986, mostly relating to Dylan and Caitlin Thomas; additional notes and drafts of talks, [1954x1970], by GJ about Dylan Thomas; and papers relating to the Dylan Thomas summer schools at Swansea (1974) and Aberystwyth (1990) attended by GJ.

An unsigned pencil draft, 1953, (4 pp.), by George Barker of his poem 'A swansong at Laugharne at the death of Dylan Thomas', consisting of twelve four-line verses, with revisions in his hand; written on the reverse of sheets from the manuscript of his father's autobiography.

Francis Dufau-Labeyrie,

Seven letters, 1979-1983, from Francis Dufau-Labeyrie to Gwen Watkins, assisting with research for her book, Portrait of a friend (Llandysul, 1983); he discusses correspondence between himself and Vernon Watkins and his recollections of Dylan Thomas. Also included are photocopies of letters, dated [1937]-1963, from Vernon Watkins to Francis Dufau-Labeyrie containing references to Dylan Thomas, and a copy of Dufau-Labeyrie's 'Notes in memory of Vernon Watkins', 1977.

Four poems sent to Thomas Taig,

Four foolscap pages, [1939], containing typescript copies of the poems 'It is the sinners' dust-tongued bell', 'How shall my animal', 'The tombstone told when she died' and 'A saint about to fall' by Dylan Thomas; his signature is inscribed in ink beneath each poem, and the typed titles, 'Three', 'Nine', 'Ten' and 'Twelve' respectively, have been crossed out and replaced with the heading 'Poem'. These copies may have been produced in preparation for The map of love (London, 1939), and appear to have been sent by Dylan Thomas to Thomas Taig for a proposed 'dramatic presentation' of Anglo-Welsh poetry at a London theatre in September 1939. Also included is a photocopy and photograph, [1953x1990], of the first page of a letter from Dylan Thomas to Thomas Taig, 23 August 1939; together with photocopies of poems in his hand, typescript copies, and printed copies of poems, [1939x1990], intended for the production, by various authors, including Glyn Jones and Keidrych Rhys (one containing amendments by the author).

Florence Thomas,

Six autograph letters (one photocopy), [1953]-1957, from Dylan Thomas's mother, Florence ('Florrie') Thomas, to various recipients including Daniel Jones, J. Oliver Stephens and Vernon Watkins. They mainly relate to her bereavement, to Dylan, Caitlin and the grandchildren, and her health.

First draft, [1970x1971], (114 pp.), heavily corrected and annotated, of the screenplay by Andrew Sinclair of 'Under Milk Wood'; a typescript copy of the 'trailer script', 1971, (3 pp.), is inserted at the end of the screenplay. Also included are published copies of the screenplay by Andrew Sinclair (London & New York, 1972); a pack containing information about the production, [1971]; a set of eight colour promotional stills, [1971]; and printed material, 1960-2003, mainly relating to the film.

Correspondence and papers, 1935-2007, relating to members of Dylan Thomas's family, including letters from his wife, Caitlin; their children, Llewelyn, Aeronwy and Colm; his parents, D. Also included is correspondence, 1954-1955, relating to the proposed publication of manuscript poems by Dylan Thomas in the notebooks held by the University of Buffalo, New York.

Holograph letter, 15 July 1953, by Dylan Thomas to Elizabeth Reitell, written in blue ink and sent from Laugharne, in which he refers to Under Milk Wood, financial matters, and a proposed opera in collaboration with Stravinsky. The envelope, included with the letter, is inscribed on the reverse by the author, 'from Dylan Thomas'.

Holograph letter, dated 26 August 1948, by Dylan Thomas to Elisabeth [Lutyens], written in black ink and sent from Witney, discussing his work and poverty. The author has inscribed the word 'dirt', with an arrow pointing to a dark smudge on the paper, at the bottom of the letter (f. 1v).

Elegy,

One page of lined paper containing early untitled ink drafts, [1953], including words, phrases, and a list of possible verse forms, (recto side only), written by Dylan Thomas whilst composing the unfinished poem 'Elegy' to his father, D. J. Thomas. The work was first published in Encounter, 6/2 (February, 1956).
