Transcripts of papers relating to the Bengal expedition

The series consists of transcripts of extracts, 23 June to 29 Sept. 1756, from the consultations at Fort St. David to the proceedings of the Select Committee at Fort St. George, Madras, relating to the expedition for the recovery of the East India Company's settlements in Bengal.

Transcripts of letters in India to Clive

The series comprises transcripts of letters, 1765-1766, (now British Library MSS Eur.G 37, boxes c. 30-42),written in India to Clive during his second and last term as governor of Bengal. The letters relate mainly to military affairs (returns and movements of troops, accounts of military disbursements, etc.); administrative matters (filling vacancies to the Council and to chiefships of stations,etc.); financial concerns (collection of revenues, the salt trade,etc.); and to relationships with the native princes.

The series comprises a transcript of letters, 1764-1766(now British Library MSS Eur.G 37, boxes c. 30-42), received by Clive from England whilst on his voyage to, and during his last period of residence in, India.

The series comprises transcripts of Clive's original 'Country letter books', 1756-1767, now NLW, Clive of India Papers CR2. The contents of four of the original letter books have been transcribed in a single volume.

The unit comprises transcripts, [c.1824]-[c.1828], of Clive of India's original letter books (now NLW, Clive of India Papers CR1-CR6); of some of Clive's letter books now no longer extant; and of other Clive papers made by or on behalf of Sir John Malcolm preparatory to his biography of Clive, together with drafts of the biography.

The file includes letters about the Batta mutiny, so called because officers below the rank of major threatened to resign their commission unless an extraordinary allownace known as 'double batta was restored.

The file includes letters from Clive's wife Margaret, his father Richard Clive, John Walsh, Robert Orme, and the Court of Directors of the East India Company. The letters in the file discuss, inter alia family and domestic matters including building work at Styche and Walcot; British politics and parliamentary affairs, including references to the American colonies and the repeal of the Stamp Act; the Regency Bill; William Pitt's appointment as Prime Minister; the rejection of the India Bill; East India Company business; the political situation in Bengal and Clive's reforms there and Robert Orme's History.
